Coursework and Preparation Programs You’ll Need:
You’ll need a Bachelor’s Degree before you can teach in Tennessee schools. There are no special undergraduate coursework requirements in individual subject areas for Tennessee teacher certification. You will, however, need to complete a Tennessee-approved teacher preparation program. A list of approved programs is available here:

For teacher certification in Tennessee, you’ll need to take the following test for basic teaching skills:

You’ll also need to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) portion of the

and one or more of the Praxis II tests in specific subject areas.
The State of Tennessee has reciprocity agreements to accept teaching credentials from most other states.
